47th AGM of The Fly Dressers' Guild - NEW! (Nov)
2nd November 2014
Around 20 members gathered at Lechlade Trout Fishery on a November morning for the 47th AGM of The Fly Dressers' Guild and a spot of fishing, followed by a light meal and lots of story swapping afterwards.  A big thank you to everyone who turned up - it was great to hear your views and your feedback, and we could not have conducted the business of the Guild in accordance with the constitution without you.

Look forward to seeing you again next year!

FDG at the CLA Game Fair House of Fishing
18th to 20th July 2014
The FDG marquee was buzzing throughout the Game Fair - over the three days, more than 130 youngsters took part in our fly tying competition whilst their parents or grandparents looked on or got a lesson or advice themselves.  A very large thank you to the CLA, Turralls and the FDG volunteers who helped to make our marquee in the House of Fishing area of the CLA Game Fair such a big success, and to all those who stopped by to visit or take part in the activities.

FDG at the Rutland Water Youth Fly Fishing Day
13th July 2014
The FDG were delighted to be offered the opportunity to run the fly tying section of the RWYFF Day, and we had a great turn out. Wendy Gibson and three members of her Nottingham-based fly tying group, Geoff Pittham, Bob Lomax and John Mycock, plus Tony Baldwin from Leicester, Ben Beckwith from the Kennett Valley Branch and Steve Davies from the North Kent Branch helped some 70 youngsters tie a Cormorant, supported by Mrs. Lomax, Ray Gibson, Chris Reeves and Caroline Emmet.  One of the youngest ones enjoyed himself so much he promised he would keep returning to the event 'until I am the oldest one in the group' - we look forward to seeing him again in the years to come!
A big thank you to the RWFF for inviting us to help at the event, to the FDG fly tiers and other volunteers who helped on the day, and to all the organisations who supported our endeavours on the day: Cortland Flies, Flies by Wendy, Glasgow Angling Centre, P W W Designs, Partridge of Redditch and Veniard.

The FDG at the Chatsworth Countryside Show
August 2013
The FDG returned to Chatsworth after many years' absence - not a revival of the old angling show, but a three-day Countryside show.  We had a full set of demonstrations planned, but were swamped with visitors wanting to have a go at tying a fly - over 90 adults and children over the course of three days!  Thank you hugely to the Countryside Alliance for inviting us into their marquee and looking after us, to the hardworking FDG fly tiers and to all the visitors who stopped by.

FDG at Longleat Fishing and Country Show
June 2013
The FDG is particularly pleased to have been part of the inaugural Longleat Fishing and Country Show.  We had a fantastic two days at the show, with a tent full to bursting of people having a go at tying a fly for the first time, watching our demonstrators tie a range of trout, salmon, carp and saltwater flies, and asking all sorts of questions.

A huge thank you to the FDG volunteers who worked so hard on the stand, to the organisers of the show for inviting us there, and to all the visitors who came to our stand - we hope to see you again next year.

Rutland Youth Fly Fishing Day
July 2012
The Fly Dressers' Guild was delighted to be invited to help Rutland Water Fly Fishers with their Rutland Youth Fly Fishing Day.  As part of the morning's programme, some 84 youngsters aged between 10 to 17 came to the FDG marquee for a half-hour introduction to fly tying.  Only six had had any previous exposure to fly tying, but still classified themselves as novices.
So six Guild members showed groups of three to four children at a time how to tie a Diawl Bach and then got each of them to tie one or two steps of the fly, with each group managing to complete at least one "team effort" fly.  At the end of the session, each child left with a "goody bag" holding an FDG fly box, step by step instructions on how to tie the Diawl Bach, a copy of Flydresser magazine, and half a dozen flies donated by the Guild and Craig Barr.  The fly tying materials used throughout the sessions were kindly donated by Veniard
The Guild members helping with the fly tying demos were: Don Stazicker, Tony Baldwin, Dylan Hooley, Charles Jardine (Chairman), Chris Reeves (General Secretary) and Caroline Emmet (Member without Portfolio).  A big thank you to Don, Tony and Dylan (and Dylan's Mum, Vicky) for their help with this event.
In the afternoon, Charles Jardine, Chris Reeves and fellows EC member Paul Little were some of the boatmen who took the children out for an afternoon's fishing on Rutland Water.
The day was a huge success, as evidenced by the pictures below (thank you to Jeremy Ball and Cliff Waters from Fishypics for allowing us to use their photos). Many congratulations to Rutland Water Fly Fishers for putting on such a cracking event, and thank you for inviting The Fly Dressers' Guild to take part.
